Renew your Oregon driver's license

Determine the Status of Your LicenseRenew-License

Driving without a valid license is illegal, so be sure to keep your license current. Make sure you also have car insurance.

If you are unsure of the status of your license, you can order a copy of your driving record for details.

Valid License
Your renewed license will be valid for eight years.

Expired License
Even if you allow your license to expire, you have up to one year to visit a DMV to renew it without having to re-take the written and driving tests.

Suspended License
To reinstate your license, you’ll have to pay a $75 fee and meet a set of requirements, which depend on why your license was suspended. For details, call the DMV at (502) 945-5400. Expect to see your insurance rates increase, as well.

Lost License
You’ll need to order a duplicate.

Check Your Renewal NoticeRenew-License

You should get a renewal postcard about two months before your license is set to expire. This notice can count as one of the identity documents needed for renewal.

If you don’t receive a reminder, you can still renew your license. You’ll just need to bring your current license or ID card in order to renew.

Renew OnlineRenew-License

Online renewal is not an option due to concerns about identity theft.

Renew By MailRenew-License

If you’re temporarily out of the state, you can request a "Valid without Photo" driver’s license packet by calling the DMV at (503) 945-5400. Mail in the form and the fee and you’ll be mailed a renewed license.

Renew In PersonRenew-License

You must renew in person at a DMV office. Plan to go before noon, in the middle of the week, and/or in the middle of the month for the shortest wait times.

To renew your license in person, you must:

* Provide proof of ID, Social Security number, and legal presence in the U.S.
* Provide proof of address (if your address has changed)
* Pass a vision screening if you’re 50 or older
* Pass the written and driving tests if your license has been expired for over a year
* Pay $39 renewal fee by cash or check

Update Your Driving SkillsRenew-License

Once you’ve renewed your license, consider taking a supplemental traffic school course. This will sharpen your skills and may even lower your insurance rates.
