Your Alabama license is valid for four years then it is time to renew.
You may renew your drivers license up to 60 days after it expires. You must have a valid insurance policy that meet the states minimum requirements. .
If you have a valid Class D driver’s license or Class M motorcycle license, you must renew your license every four years either in person or by mail.
If you license is expired and has been so for three years or less you can usually renew it without an exam either in person or by mail.
You can only drive with your expired license as long as it’s within the 60-day grace period. After that, you can no longer legally drive.
Residents with suspended or revoked licenses cannot renew, but rather re-instate their license. There is a fee of at least $100 to possibly more than $275 associated with re-instatement.

Typically your renewal notice is mailed within 60 days prior to your licenses expiration date. The notice includes all the requirements necessary to renew including fees and where you can renew.
Online renewal is not currently available.
Renew By MailRenew-License
If you obtained your license in the last four years and you are:
(1)In the military or are the dependent of someone in the military.
(2)A college student away from home
(3)A resident who is temporarily out of state due to work
You may renew by mail by completing the renewal application for Alabama drivers temporarily out of the state, include a $23 money order payable to the Driver License Division.
Include proof for the reason you are out of state, such as a copy of your military ID or student ID. Mail the application, fee and proof documents to:

Renew In PersonRenew-License
If you’re ineligible to renew by mail, you must renew in person.
You will need your current license and be prepared to pay the $23 fee and have your photo taken.
Call the nearest office to make an appointment.
A temporary license will be provided. Your permanent license will be mailed. Allow two to three weeks for delivery.
Update Your Driving SkillsRenew-License
You renew your driver’s license every four years. Its a good idea to refresh your road skills. Some insurance companies offer a discount for taking a supplemental or refresher course.
