Choose Your LicenseApply-License
You must own a driver’s license to operate in Colorado and can choose from three different types.
*A Class R license is for all vehicles and must be renewed every five years. Drivers under the age of 21, must renew on their 21st birthday.
*Class M endorsement is for motorcycle riders. This is not an actual license.
*Class A, B, and C cover commercial vehicles and must be renewed every four years.
If you are younger than 18 you must first take a driver’s ed course, get a permit and complete a driver’s training program for in-car instruction before applying for a Colorado license.
If you are under 18 you must hold your permit for more than 12 months before you can apply for a driver license.

Drivers under 16 must take drivers education.
If you are applying for a license for the first time and are older than 16 it is not required to take a driving course, however it is recommended.

Locate a DMV OfficeApply-License
Visit your local Division of Motor Vehicle (DMV) office when you’re ready to take the written exam. No appointment is necessary.
Make Test-Day PreparationsApply-License
On the day of your test you will need to provided identification, age, name and legal status. Photocopies or notarized copies will not be accepted.
*Bring your Social Security card and proof of Colorado residency.
*If you are younger than 18 you will need to complete and sign an Affidavit of Liability and Guardianship.
*Be prepared to pay the $14 fee for the permit.
After passing your vision and written tests you’ll be issued a permit based on your age.
Take the Written TestApply-License
Visit any DMV office to take the written test.
If you do not pass the test you can re-take it the same day, provided you answered more than half of the questions correctly. Otherwise, you must wait until the next business day to take the exam again.
Get a CarApply-License
You will need a car to take Colorados road test.
Get Car InsuranceApply-License
Car insurance is mandatory in Colorado.
Take the Driving TestApply-License
You will need to make an appointment with your local office and bring:
*Your Drive Time Log Sheet (if required).
*Cash or check to pay $21 license fee.
*A car that’s properly registered and insured.
New Colorado resident with a valid license from another state, do not have to take a road exam.
Once you pass you will be issued a temporary license valid for 30 days.
If you do not pass, you must wait at least one business day before taking it again.
Receive Your License in the MailApply-License
You should receive you permanent license in the mail within 30 days.
