Determine the Status of Your RegistrationRegistration-Renewals

You need to renew your car registration and vehicle tags each year. The state has a staggered registration systemJanuary through Novemberso you’ll renew your tags in your assigned month.
Renewing on time is important because without a valid registration you are driving illegally. Valid insurance is also required.

Register a Vehicle in AL for the First Time
If youve never registered your car in the state before, you will need to refer to the first time registration section.

Most counties in the state mail renewal notices, however, if you dont receive it, it is your responsibility to contact the local office and renew.
Renewal notices will inform you if you are eligible to renew online and what fees you will be required to pay. The state does not require smog and emissions inspections.

Fees vary depending on a vehicles weight and the length of renewal as well as the make and model of the vehicle.
Avoid Late Fees and Penalties
You have until the last day of that month to register without penalty. There is a $15 penalty if you fail to renew during your registration period.

Renew Online
Not every county offers online renewal and steps vary by county.
Your renewal notice will tell you whether you may renew online.
You will need:
The make and model of the vehicle and the first four numbers or letters of your Vehicle Identification Number.
Most counties take either Visa or MasterCard. Make sure you have a valid state identification such as a drivers license.
Have an e-mail address and phone number.
Once the process is complete your tags will be sent to you in the mail.
In Person
You will need your renewal notice and a valid ID. Know your vehicles VIN and be prepared to pay the associated fees. Check with your local office to learn what type of payments they accept.
By Mail
Have your renewal notice and drivers license number and VIN handy.
Fill out the appropriate forms and send them with check or money order to your local title and tag office.
Be sure you allow enough time for your title and tag office to process and return your registration before it expires.
Affix Your Stickers
Once you receive your stickers by mail or in person at the DMV (one for the month and one for the year), just follow the instructions provided to properly affix the stickers to the license plate.
